This week in my open level Yoga classes, i have been creating a great deal of sequencing around balancing poses.
warrior 3. half moon. even some renegade arm balancing series.
the purpose of this work, goes well beyond the ability to be poised on one leg, or balance on your hands. Balance must be cultivated OFF the mat as well. SO much of what we practice in our classes, is not meant to be left behind in the studio, but rather to be taken in our hearts out into the world.
Life itself is ALL about balance. energy and rest. work and play. yin and yang.
As much as we are here to share our gifts, we are also here to enjoy all the beauty and opportunity that surrounds us. In order to cultivate our gifts we must have experiences that feed our soul. Many puritanical critics might dismiss such experiences as frivolous or over-indulgent (and naturally we have to know our boundaries), but living life to it's FULLEST extent under the parameters of that which cultivates wellness & feeds our higher purpose can only make us better people. By nurturing & nourishing ourselves physically and emotionally, we are better able to be there for others, as teachers, parents, friends, partners, co-workers, etc.
This summer, i have taken my own advice and balanced a great deal of fun into a schedule packed with teaching classes, writing deadlines, shooting schedules, building my on-line business, and weekly meetings. The result has been higher productivity, a more joyful spirit, a more rested body, and greater opportunities coming my way!
some of my favorite 'balancing acts' so far this summer include:
SUMMER CONCERT SERIES AT SANTA MONICA PIER
HOSTING BABY SHOWERS
TRAVERSING HERMOSA BEACH WITH FRIENDS
POOL PARTIES
RUNNING IN MY NEON NIKES
JJUICING.... WITH OTHER PEOPLES' VITAMIXES
PLAYING WITH FIRE (BUT ONLY ON JULY 4TH)
SUNSET GAZING ON VENICE ROOFTOPS
At the end of your summer..... screw it, at the end of your LIFE.... i hope you head up to the pearly gates, or on to your next incarnation with an infinite highlight reel of memorable moments of your life, where you had nothing to do but breathe and enjoy!
